In recognition of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, here is an in-depth look into scholarships that you should apply for if you're a homeless student!

If you're a homeless or previously foster-care college student, there are many scholarships you might qualify for to support your college journey. We've compiled a list of five scholarships to be on the lookout for. The first scholarship application will open up on January 1st, so get started on your application now!
  1. Foster Care to Success
    • Description: Foster Care to Success is a non-profit organization that works exclusively with college-bound foster youth. They provide scholarships like these to help students pay for college.
    • Amount: Between $2,500 - $5,000
    • Application Dates: January 1st, 2021 - March 31st, 2021
    • Eligibility:
      • Been in public or private foster care for the 12 consecutive months leading up to and including your 18th birthday
      • OR have been adopted or placed into legal guardianship after your 16th birthday
      • OR have been orphaned for at least one year at the time of your 18th birthday and not subsequently adopted

  2. The SchoolHouse Connection Leadership and Scholarship Program
    • Description: SchoolHouse Connection is a non-profit organization that assists youth suffering from homelessness.
    • Amount: $2,000
    • Application Dates: Application opens in June 2021 and closes in October 2021
    • Eligibility:
      • Homeless within the last six years.
      • Must be a high school senior in the fall of 2021

  3. Youth Scholarship
    • Description: National Foster Parent Association is a non-profit that seeks to support foster families and children by promoting education.
    • Amount: $500
    • Application Dates: Application opens February 10th, 2021 and closes on April 5th, 2021
    • Eligibility:
      • Parent or supportive adult must be part of the National Foster Parent Association
      • Must be a birth, foster, kinship, or youth adopted through foster care

  4. UMPS CARE Charities All-Star College Scholarship
    • Description: UMPS CARE Charities was founded by MLB umpires and seeks to provide financial and emotional support to American Youth.
    • Amount: $10,000
    • Application Dates: Application opens February 10th, 2021
    • Eligibility:
      • Adopted after or at the age of 13
      • Be an incoming college freshman under the age of 20

  5. Horatio Alger State Scholarship
    • Description: The Horatio Alger Association has funded need-based scholarships for low-income students since 1984. They have several scholarships that you can look into.
    • Amount: $10,000
    • Application Dates: Application opens August 1st, 2021 and closes October 25th, 2022
    • Eligibility:
      • Be a US Citizen
      • Minimum GPA of 2.0
      • Demonstrate critical financial need (less than $55,000 or lower adjusted gross family income)
      • Be a high school senior graduating in spring or summer of 2022
